Permanent exhibition in the nature conservation base Dümmer

Final measure of the LIFE-project was the opening of a permanent exhibition in the hall of the nature conservation base. The exhibition was completely renovated and designed in a new and modern layout.

In eight different information sections visitors can experience the development of the Dümmer lowlands, their significance for international nature conservation and the protection of endangered species today. In this context it is also explained how the farmers use the lowlands in a way that supports nature conservation and how the area will be further developed. The different sections are connected by an integrative design. Large posters create a pleasant ambiance and guide the visitor’s eye towards the info sections.

Various interactive exhibits encourage the experience- and reminder value for visitors. The exhibition is arranged in a way that it can be kept open without permanent surveillance.

Opening hours are daily from 10 am until 6 pm, the entrance is free of charge.

Nature trails "Dümmer-Ufer"

Two nature trails were created along the western bank of the lake, which tie up to the few years old nature trail "Dümmer” in Ochsenmoor. The special natural features of the Dümmer lowlands are displayed to cyclists and hikers.

While the short trail around Olgahafen was specially designed for hikers, the trail stations along the further course of the bank are mainly set up for cyclists. Four of these stations have an interactive design.

The youth- and holiday center of Vechta district is situated next to the start of the nature trails. About 10,000 people, mainly pupils with their school classes, visit this center every year. Especially for this clientele as well as for other interested visitors the "nature trail quiz rally” was developed. The lapwing, mascot of the trails, asks a question at every station. The answer can easily be found by studying the information board.

"Dümmer cloverleaf"

Four institutions are situated close to the lake like cloverleaves. Here guests and visitors can experience the special natural features of the Dümmer lowlands.

The so called "Dümmer-Vogelschau" (Bird exhibition at the Dümmer lake) houses stuffed birds of about 200 different species of Dümmer lowlands and offers some good information about it’s birdlife.

The "Dümmer-Museum" in Lembruch features the interaction between nature, culture and economy of Dümmer lowlands in the course of time. A large aquarium and significant archaeological discoveries complete the exhibition.

In the "Schäferhof" (Shepherds farm) in Ochsenmoor the society "Naturraum Dümmerniederung" cares for the preservation of the unique landscape of lake and lowlands. Beside being home of more than 1,000 sheep of local breed the shepherd’s farm offers comfortable space and a good infrastructure for nature related events.

In the "Naturschutzstation" (nature conservation base) in Hüde the above mentioned exhibition features the status quo of nature conservation efforts at Dümmer lowlands.

So at all four institutions show various aspects of nature protection at Dümmer lake. Each of one focuses on an individual issue. These institutions cooperate in a network called "Dümmer cloverleaf”.

Film "Naturparadies Dümmerniederung"

During the years 2003 and 2004 author Uwe Anders spent many days and nights with his camera in Dümmer lowlands, to capture the outstanding beauty of this unique landscape on film. The 22 minutes lasting video "Naturparadies Dümmerniederung" was produced, which provides some sensitive insight into birdlife. The DVD includes an English version as well. The film is shown as an integral part of the new exhibition at the nature conservation base.
